Many people contact me and ask my advice on how to become a life coach. Here are some frequently asked questions. If you have any questions that are not answered here and would like an informal chat, send me your contact details and I will get in touch with you.

Do I need to train in psychology to be a life coach?
No. While it might be an advantage to come from a psychology or counseling background, it is not necessary. Life coaching is different from counseling or therapy, both of which look to a person’s past for the root of the problems that they are experiencing in the present. Life coaching is not like that. It does not dwell in the past looking for negative experiences. It is filled with hope and expectation that the future can be the best it can be if you take time to look at your options, assess your skills and develop a plan to move your life in the direction you want.

How can I be an expert on all the problems that my clients may have?
You don’t have to be! Your role is to move your client towards that new future and enable them to realise their true potential. You are not expected to be an expert on their problems. Far from it!! The successful coach does not tell the client what to do or how to do it. The role of the coach is to help the client manage the changes that are required to move their life forward. During this important process, you will support your client and offer them the opportunity to gain new insights into their situation and the options that they have to achieve their dreams.

I wasn’t very good at school, will that hold me back?
Definitely not! Successful life coaches come from all walks of life.
They work with a whole host of people who are experiencing challenging times in their lives. Whether your client is coping with a specific problem or crisis or whether they just feel that their life is out of balance, they feel that they need to make changes in their lives. Many clients need a down to earth approach from their coach; they need focus and strength from their coach, not someone who is going to make them feel inferior.

Can you tell me what makes a successful coach?
Great coaches get great training! It’s as easy as that. The secret is not just that they are great at coaching – that’s only part of the story. They also need to be good at the business of running a business. To be great and successful, you need to make sure that you find the training program that will teach you the skills you need to run a successful business.

Do I really need to train or could I just become a coach without the bother?
No and yes ….but then, well… no! It is true that life coaching is not accredited at the moment which means that you can set up as a coach without any training. However, most agree that regulation of life coaching is bound to come soon and those practicing without any formal qualification will have to get themselves qualified in order to continue. Most clients looking for a coach will be more inclined to choose a qualified coach over a coach with no formal qualifications so it is essential to your success to get great training!

How much does it cost to train?
Ah, now there’s the rub! It can cost up to £2,500 to gain a diploma in life coaching, depending on which provider you choose. Sadly, it isn’t always a case that the more you pay, the better the training either! This could result in a costly mistake if you sign up for an expensive course and then realise half way through that life coaching is not for you.

So, how can I find out if it’s for me without paying out a fortune?
The quickest and easiest way to find out how life coaching works is to experience it for yourself. If you have never had the experience of a life makeover, you will be at a great disadvantage when you are trying to get clients to try it. Sign up today for the full Life Makeover Experience.
