Give Yourself A Happiness Boost Right Now!

December 2007

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us. ~ Helen Keller

Do you need a happiness boost—right now? If so, take a look at the options below and make your choices. Remember, the more you tackle, the bigger the boost you’ll receive.

When you’re feeling blue, it can be hard to muster up the physical and mental energy to do the things that make you happier. Flopping down in front of the TV and eating a family sized bar of chocolate seems like an easier fix.

However, research shows (and you know it’s true) that these aren’t the routes to feeling better so why not try some choices below. The more you push yourself, the better you’ll feel; but if you can’t tackle a big task, just do something small. Even a little step in the right direction will give you a lift and remember that life is good when we simply take the time to focus on what's important.

Friends

  • call or email one of your closest friends
  • call or email three friends to whom you haven’t spoken in a while
  • track down an old friend who has drifted out of your life

Fun

  • read through your local paper and book tickets for a show or play.
  • Go through it again and see how many things you can do for free
  • Switch off the TV and play some games
  • Smile at total strangers and see how many smile back!

Challenge

  • think of a subject that you wish you knew more about and spend 15 minutes on the internet reading about it
  • take a step toward acquiring a new skill– research Italian classes in the area or order Photoshop for Dummies
  • if you absolutely can’t think of one single subject that interests you, visit two bookstores (one huge, one independent) and browse until some book catches your attention – and buy it!

Energy

  • walk
  • walk the dog
  • walk someone else’s dog
  • tidy up the garden
  • Put your name down for a fun run/sponsored walk

Order

  • clear out the space around your computer
  • deal with some old emails that you haven’t answered
  • walk through your house with a bin liner and clear clutter until the bag is full then walk around again and fill a new bag with things to be given away; repeat

Duty

  • make a dentist’s or doctor’s appointment that you’ve been putting off
  • contact a family member whom you’ve been neglecting
  • make something right: apologize, confess, repair, replace, or return something you have borrowed

Do Good, Feel Good

  • click through the charities linked at The Breast Cancer Site
  • Play the lottery through Play Monday where your money is donated to the charity of your choice
  • Sponsor a child in Africa
  • volunteer at your local hospital

Inspiration

  • Buy your favourite flowers and place them where you can appreciate their beauty.
  • Read some poetry.
  • Research some inspiring quotes. Mine change daily but these words by Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds inspires me to aspire:

"To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden, or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded."

I hope that you got to do the items that you checked off and they made you feel happier. If you have others that you think deserve a mention, feel free to email me at info@teresawebb.com I would love to hear from you.
